So, Collin/Candice have requested that I make this a permanent endeavor, so I shall most happily oblige. :-)
I am currently listening to Frank Sinatra and talking to Daniel while working the front desk... at 3AM, lol. Being a night assistant is fun -- when I get sleep before hand. Most nights I get a lot (or at least some) of my homework done for the next day, which is good, because somehow I have managed to stay super busy, even though this semester was supposed to be easier. Also, we were discussing futures and things, and it's weird to think about the fact that we are really growing up. I start work on a thesis next semester... then it's the end of my undergraduate... then grad school somewhere (hopefully, England!!!). And on his end, he was talking about roughly all the same stuff, in addition to marriage plans, etc. It just blows my mind, ya know? Like I've known him since 6th grade and Emily since 7th, and they are probably going to be getting engaged before the end of this year. I mean, it's awesome! Just, getting older is odd, lol.
I had an interesting day today. It started out horrible -- I was writing my colloquium paper last night (it was due at 8AM this morning), but about 3AM I fell asleep... I didn't wake up until about 11:30AM, which meant that my paper was late, and I slept through my first two classes. Awesome. However, it got better -- I went over to the museum for my Exhibits class, where we presented our projects in class. This class is so wonderful -- we are actually researching, designing, creating, and installing a temporary exhibit for the Dr Pepper Museum about 125 years of advertising. We went over there on Monday and had a planning meeting -- the thought is that we are going to break the art up sort of by decade and analyze how the advertising reflected the general culture, values, etc. of the time period. Each decade is going to have about 2 people working on it, so I'm really excited. The exhibit opens in late November and will be up for a full year, in honor of the 125th anniversary of Dr Pepper. It's so affirming to be actually getting experience doing the things you love.
This evening, after class, we had a Museum Studies Student Association meeting followed by a pizza/movie watching party. The movie was all about the history of museums in America, and it again was just so affirming. Sometimes I go through these phases where I'm like, "Do I really want to work in museums, or wouldn't it be so much cooler to be an academic?" Then on nights like these I remember why I love museums and honestly wouldn't be happy doing anything else. The Academy is great and important, but museums are the single most important means by which the great truths discussed in the Academy are diffused to the general public. They get to talk about a time period; we let people interact with that time period, learning about it through material culture, art, as well as the written records of the period. It's really the best of all worlds.
Well, I think that's it for now. I should probably attempt to catch up in my reading for Dr. Wood's class, as I am slightly behind and we have a midterm next week. I'll check back in shortly. Bye! :-)
And I third the notion. It's always good to hear your voice, even if you do use "lol" waay to much. Oh, and if you want to think about growing up, just wait until next year.
ReplyDeleteUm, I only used "lol" twice this entry, sir, so shut it! ;-)
ReplyDeleteFurthermore... nope, I can't think of anything else. Oh, except I haven't heard from you in forever, so call me or e-mail me or something and let me know how life is!
