Kiss Kiss and Chesterton

So tonight was another fabulous installment of that most wonderful of Friday night activities, Crane Scholars! We're spending this semester reading our way through Chesterton's Orthodoxy, which is simply one of the most entertaining yet profound books I think I have ever read in my life! Basically, however, this post will simply be a summation of all the reasons that Cranes is awesome:

  • Free dinner, cooked by the guy who is determining what I make on my midterm next week.
  • Getting to sit around with some of my closest friends and some of the most amazing professors on campus for 3 hours on a Friday night discussing serious matters of theology. Really, it's the coolest thing ever! Tonight, we talked about Chapter 5, "The Flag of the World," which states that the true relationship to have with existence is to be neither an optimist nor a pessimist, but to be a patriot; to be fiercely loyal to the concept of life, focusing not on its usefulness for you, nor on your mastery over it (because to say that either of them truly exists is heresy), but upon your love for it. This centered for a large part of the conversation around Chesterton's dealings with suicide and working through that. Sometimes, however, things got a little silly (and rightly so)...
  • "You should get on twitter, before it becomes too mainstream making you just seem like a conformist." (Hannah)
  • "I apologize for the current state of my house" (Dr. Candler), "Texas?" (Evan)
  • "So, Boys State is... like... Lord of the Flies but in suits." (Jordan)
  • Centrifuging a latte to get a machiatto -- yes, that's how we postulate that they do it, lol.
  • "What the hell are you doing?" (Candler), "She's tweeting what Travis just said" (Evan), "Oh my god! Have you not been listening to anything I've been saying for the past hour about the pervasiveness of acedia in modernity?!?!" (Candler), "...What's twitter?" (Bond)
  • Discussing Whoopi Goldberg's opinion of the Roman Polanski case in Thomistic terms: "Rape can be distinguished in three kinds; rape, 'rape-rape', and rapity-rape-rape..." (Candler)
  • Rocking out to T-Pain's "Kiss Kiss" in the car on the ride home, which culminated in sitting in the parking garage, having a dance party in the front seat, and having it captured on Caleb's iPhone.
So, yes, essentially, Cranes equals wonderful. Every time.
