So, I'm finally here! Currently, I am sitting in my dorm room at Imperial College, London, looking out the window at Kensington Garden and hearing "Amazing Grace" being played by someone on the street below through our open window. Seriously, I could drop everything right now, move all my stuff to England, never leave, and be perfectly happy. :-)
The trip getting here was wholly uneventful as far as trans-Atlantic, connecting flights go. On the first leg from Boston, I was sitting next to this 14 year old named Nathan, who slept for most of the flight. However, during the last hour or so, I guess his sleepiness wore off, and he gifted me with his wealth of information about space travel. Apparently he wants to be in the Air Force, and then eventually switch to NASA, so that he can set up a base on Mars and live there. His wealth of knowledge was a mixture of actual science and an intense familiarity with science fiction. He also explained to me how relatively simple it would be to turn our plane into a spaceship, break through the atmosphere, and find ourselves in a different galaxy. All in all, it made the last part of the ride pretty humorous, and infinitely less boring than the first bit.
My second flight was even less eventful than the first, so I will spare you all a description, save to say that it was relatively empty, meaning I got both seats to myself, leading to a considerably good amount of sleep. Yay!
Once in London, I met up with the rest of the group. I was very proud of myself, for this was actually a harder task than it would seem. One of the other girls in our group had a rather difficult time of it, lol. Dr. Hanks told me he was very proud of the fact that I navigated Heathrow successfully, "although for someone with 84 separate extracurricular activities, I should imagine it wouldn't be too difficult." I laughed.
Our afternoon was very relaxed. We checked into our rooms, then took a nice long walk through Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, stopping off to see the Serpentine, the Peter Pan statue, Speaker's Corner, etc. After that, group of us walked around for a while trying to find dinner, and we ended up at this Italian place where they treated us rather poorly, because we were very obviously a group of 10 twenty-year-old, American girls... I mean, they weren't flat out mean to us, but we waited for our food much longer than tables of people who came in after us, etc. The only other kind of lame thing is that my phone isn't working right now, so I haven't been able to get a hold of Amber to meet up with her. I don't know why, but I can't get a signal. I e-mailed Dad, however, and hopefully, we'll get it all resolved.
I guess that's it for now! I think I'm off to do some reading for class. :-)
