Fasting from Facebook, Pet-sitting, and Museums, Museums, Museums

Ok, so I've started this post like three times, but I keep hating how I'm beginning it. Serious writing fail today...

I'm in Waco over Spring Break. Currently, I am sitting in Dr. Murray's study, using her internet connection. (Remember that professor I had beginning of freshman year who had class in her living room? Yeah, same apartment.) I'm in town (and consequently not in Chicago with Jennifer et al.) because when Dr. Caston had talked to me over Christmas, she had mentioned that one of the main times they would need my help with the exhibit was over the break. Yeah, by the break, she apparently meant yesterday and today. So, I'm in Waco all week with nothing left to do but homework/independent readings. (Oh, and to feed Murray's cat, lol, hence the sitting in her study thing.) It's actually been kind of fun, however. I mean, I love Lennie-kitty -- and having full access to the apartment for the week is a nice plus, too. And working with the museum was fun (mostly). I really enjoy this exhibit-y bit of things, and meeting everyone, and getting my lunches bought for me by Provosts and the Dean of the Honors College, and even just getting to help with such a cool exhibit. However, sometimes I felt a little like I was just getting in the way. One of those too many cooks in the kitchen things, I guess. You're thankful for the help moving and lifting, but you never really want more than two people expressing opinions, because the more opinions, the more frustrated everyone gets. So, mostly I just kept quiet and moved things.

At least I'm not fully by myself this week -- Andy and Sarai are here. Andy's been in kind of a funky mood, though (then again, I think I might have been as well, so I guess turn-around is fair play), so for example, last night we just sat in the JCR in almost silence watching crappy TV until we both got so bored of it that finally I made him play a board game. It was not a very exciting evening, lol.

Something that was exciting about last night, though -- I got back to Murray's and checked my e-mail, and I had a note from the Philadelphia Museum of Art wanting to set up a phone interview with me about my application! Maybe I won't be out of luck for the summer, after all! Also, sometime this week, I am supposed to have a phone interview with a member of the Board of Directors for the National Museum of American History. Apparently, he taught Daniel's Sunday School class a while back, and when Daniel wrote to him about something the other week, he included a postscript about me. Anyway, I'm trying to be hopeful. :-)

Not much else to comment on right now. I'm not on facebook, because I gave it up for Lent. I think it's been good in a lot of ways, because I haven't wasted so much time on the internet (though, I have managed to find other, more tangible things with which to waste a significant portion of my time still). However, it is also kind of lamesauce, because it means that I am being caught unawares by people's birthdays and stranded without facebook chat. (Occasionally, AIM has been able to replace that, at least in the case of those people who are halfway around the freaking world.) I also, like I mentioned earlier, I have tons I need to do with my readings -- which, p.s., means that I finally have a thesis topic! I'm writing on the Miracles of Saint James, which can be found in Book II of the Codex Calixtinus, with Murray. It's fun, but difficult on top of work and my normal course load (not to mention the 8 billion extracurriculars in which I am involved).

Anyway, I guess that's it for now. Maybe I'll go be productive. I feel oddly motivated to be so today. Ciao!

  1. I hope your break was worth it, even though you didn't feel like you did much! I am proud of you, Jenjen.
